Spring Stakes Spectacular Moved to Saturday, April 24

Seven Stakes Worth $750,000 Led by Tesio for 3-Year-Olds

LAUREL, MD – As a result of the ongoing pause of live racing at Laurel Park through Sunday, April 4, the Maryland Jockey Club has pushed its Spring Stakes Spectacular program back one week to Saturday, April 24.

All seven stakes worth $750,000 in purses originally scheduled for Saturday, April 17 will be run on the new date with a similar 12:40 p.m. post time. Nominations for all stakes are due Saturday, April 3.

Statement from Maryland Jockey Club at Laurel Park

“In consultation with Maryland State Veterinarian, Dr Michael Odian and the Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association, the suspension of live racing at Laurel Park has been extended through April 4.

“This added precautionary measure will further protect the horses stabled at both Pimlico and Laurel Park. The two properties will continue to be treated as separate quarantine zones as announced on March 25.

Laurel Park Remains Open for Weekend Simulcasting

LAUREL, MD – Laurel Park will remain open for simulcasting following the cancellation of live racing for the final weekend of its 2021 winter meet.

Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. Saturday to allow for wagering on the Dubai World Cup program from Meydan Racecourse, beginning with the Dubai World Cup (G2) on turf in Race 3 (8:50 a.m.). The $12 million Dubai World Cup (G1) will go off as Race 9 (12:50 p.m.).

Statement from Dr. Dionne Benson, Chief Veterinarian for 1/ST Racing

The Maryland Jockey Club was informed this evening by Maryland State Veterinarian Dr. Michael Odian, that a horse at Pimlico has tested positive for the Equine Herpes Virus (EHV-1).  The horse had been isolated for 72 hours prior to the positive test.

Pool to Grow in Excess of $500,000

LAUREL, MD – With a carryover of $154,931.69 in the Stronach 5, Friday’s pool is expected to grow in excess of $500,000 while featuring races from Laurel Park, Gulfstream Park, Santa Anita Park and Golden Gate Fields along with an industry-low 12-percent takeout.

The Stronach 5, which continues to show a strong return on investment, will begin Friday at 4:30 p.m. with Laurel’s eighth race.
