Laurel Park Cancels Saturday and Sunday Racing Due to Heat

Thursday, Friday Race Programs Unaffected

LAUREL, MD – Due to forecasts calling for excessive heat with temperatures hovering around 100 degrees, the Maryland Jockey Club has decided to cancel its live racing programs Saturday, July 20 and Sunday, July 21.

LAUREL, MD – Twice in a row, trainer Michael Pino had watched his 3-year-old filly Karama sail to the lead in turf route stakes at Monmouth Park only to see her give way in the end. On Sunday, Pino cut the Shadwell Stable homebred daughter of Kitten’s Joy back to 5 ½ furlongs and found himself a turf sprinter.

Laurel, MD – Largely ignored by bettors despite a powerful score in the Grade 3 Chick Lang Stakes on Preakness Day at Pimlico, Calumet Farm homebred Lexitonian returned to the Free State and struck again, riding the rail to an upset victory in the $75,000 Concern Stakes on Sunday at Laurel Park.

The Concern was one of five stakes races worth a combined $400,000 on Laurel’s Summer Sunday Stakes program.

A Spirited Win by Ghouls Night Out in Jameela

Oldies But Goodies Has Plenty Left in Ben’s Cat  

LAUREL, MD – Mens Grille Racing’s Ghoul’s Night Out, a 19-1 longshot trained by Hamilton Smith and ridden by Jorge Vargas Jr., drove past A Great Time in deep stretch to win the $75,000 Jameela by a neck.

Ghoul’s Night Out, a 5-year-old mare by Ghostzapper, returned $40 after covering the 5 ½ furlong course in 1:02.65. It was her first victory on the turf in three attempts.

LAUREL, MD – Laurel Park’s 20-cent Rainbow 6 will feature five races on its world-class turf course Saturday and a carryover of $66,161.96.

First race post for Saturday’s nine-race program is 1:10 p.m. The Rainbow 6 sequence will begin with the fourth race, a 5 ½ furlong turf event that has attracted a field of 11.

Multiple winning tickets Friday on the Rainbow 6 returned $1,191.92.
