Champion Jockey Toledo Returns to Ride Friday at Laurel

Maryland’s Leading Rider in 2017 Out Since Jan. 21 Spill
Rainbow 6 Carryover Grows to $52,584 for Saturday
 
LAUREL, MD – Jevian Toledo, Maryland’s leading rider in 2015 and 2017, made his return to the irons with a pair of mounts Friday at Laurel Park.
 
Toledo, 23, had not ridden in a race since Jan. 20 at Laurel. The Puerto Rico native was injured in a spill during training hours the following morning at Laurel, suffering compression fractures of the T7 and T8 vertebrae in his middle back as well as a collapsed lung.
 
“He was never in much pain and he was able to stay in shape,” Toledo’s agent, Marty Leonard, said. “He started getting on horses about two weeks ago and has felt pain-free being on a horse.”
 
Toledo finished seventh on Zestful, trained by Graham Motion, in Race 7 and fifth aboard Jason Egan-trained She’s Achance Too in Race 8.
 
Leonard said the plan is to bring Toledo back slowly, riding no more than two races a day. He has no mounts on Saturday’s card at Laurel and is named to ride The Great Ronaldo in Sunday’s ninth race. 
 
Last year Toledo led all Maryland riders with 144 wins and $4,564,961 in purse earnings, earning the meet title at Laurel’s calendar year-ending fall stand for his fourth career crown. He ranked second in Maryland’s overall standings in 2016.
 
Rainbow 6 Carryover Grows to $52,584 for Saturday
 
The 20-cent Rainbow 6 went unsolved Friday, growing the jackpot carryover to $52,584.06 for Saturday’s nine-race program.
 
First race post time is 12:30 p.m.
 
Two horses were live to take down the jackpot heading into Friday’s ninth-race finale, won by Roethlisberger ($8.60). A total of $31,313 was wagered into the popular multi-race wager, adding to a carryover of $42,563 from Thursday’s program.
 
Multiple tickets with all six winners each returned $5,010.06.
 
The Rainbow 6 will span Races 4-9 Saturday. There will also be a carryover of $3,748.24 in the 50-cent Late Pick 5, which begins in Race 5.
 
Notes: Trainer Jamie Ness swept the late daily double with Tango Delta ($25.40) in the eighth race and Roethlisberger ($8.60) in the ninth.
