Charged Cotton Wins As The Choice In All Brandy Stakes
LAUREL, MD. 09-15-12---Sagamore Farm’s Charged Cotton left the starting gate as the 7-5 favorite and lived up to top billing with a rallying score in the $100,000 All Brandy Stakes for registered Maryland-bred fillies and mares at Laurel Park.
The All Brandy was contested over the firm turf and included ten starters. Horacio Karamanos was at the controls as Charged Cotton, a lightly raced daughter of Dehere, stalked the pace from fifth before swinging three wide into the stretch and overtaking frontrunner Daydreamin Gracie, before holding off a late surge by longshot Grant Park to win by a length and a quarter.
“My horse broke inside so I saved ground, as much as I can,” said Karamanos. “I waited for the moment. At the eighth pole she wanted to go, so I wait a little more. I let her run a little bit. We got into the stretch and I said ‘go to her now’.”
Charged Cotton, who is trained by Ignacio Correas, IV, completed the nine furlong distance in 1:47.05 and paid $4.80.
“She had some behavior problems,” said Correas. “We worked hard. It’s nice to have a home-bred who is a stakes winner. She only has room to improve and I think she has a nice future in front of her.”
Charged Cotton improved her record to three wins in five starts, which have all been across the turf. This was her first stakes win.
“She showed us she had talent and there was something there,” added Correas. “But she can be difficult to work with. She tells us what she likes and we adapt.”
Baltimore Belle, the program favorite, finished a disappointing fifth after attending the pace just ahead of the ultimate winner.
