Elsa Dominant Winner for Godolphin in Career Debut Friday

Animal Kingdom Filly Captures Maiden Event by 3 ¾ Lengths
Rainbow 6, Late Pick 5, Super Hi-5 Carryovers for Saturday

LAUREL, MD – Godolphin homebred Elsa, a juvenile daughter of 2011 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Animal Kingdom, made her much-anticipated race debut an impressive one with a 3 ¾-length victory in Friday’s featured third race at Laurel Park.

Ridden by Sheldon Russell for trainer Michael Stidham, Elsa ($9) cruised to the wire in 1:02.74 for 5 ½ furlongs over a firm Bowl Game turf course in the $40,000 maiden special weight for 2-year-old fillies.

Out of the Distorted Humor mare Abtasaamah, Elsa had been working steadily at the Fair Hill Training Center in Elkton, Md. for her debut, showing seven breezes since late May over the main and all-weather surfaces including four bullet workouts.

“We really are proud of her,” Stidham said. “She’s kind of touted herself from the first day she stepped in our barn. We’ve liked her a lot and she went out there and did her thing today. She’s pretty nice, we think. We had our hopes pretty high today.”

Second choice in a field of nine at 7-2, Elsa settled in third behind Skyphos and 3-5 favorite Sexyama through a quarter-mile in 22.99 seconds and a half in 46. Russell tipped Elsa out three wide rounding the far turn, wresting the lead from Sexyama in mid-stretch and steadily edging away under a hand ride.

Sexyama was a clear second, 3 ¾ lengths ahead of Varenka, who held off late-running Who U Gonna Call by a nose for third.

Elsa is one of 25 horses Stidham has for Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashad Al Maktoum’s Godolphin operation, 20 of them 2-year-olds. Elsa was the first juvenile of the group to run for Stidham, who was initially introduced to Sheikh Mohammed after he purchased Stonerside Stable from Bob and Janice McNair.

“We got our foot in the door through Stonerside,” Stidham said. “Godolphin is phenomenal. You get the very best horses bred in the world and you get a lot of really good opportunities. We’re just thankful to be in that position.”

Elsa is likely headed to stakes company for her second start. The next open stakes for juvenile fillies on the grass at Laurel is the $100,000 Selima at six furlongs Saturday, Sept. 15.

“With 2-year-olds, when they break their maiden this quickly you really don’t have a lot of options other than stakes, and she has kind of indicated that she’s going to be that kind,” Stidham said. “We’ll probably be looking for some black-type races.”

Rainbow 6, Late Pick 5, Super Hi-5 Carryovers for Saturday

Michael Harrison’s Annie Boo Boo ($72.80) sprung a 35-1 upset of Friday’s 10th race finale, triggering a trio of carryovers for Saturday’s 11-race program which begins with a 1:10 p.m. first post.

The 20-cent Rainbow 6 will have a jackpot carryover of $8,794.80, starting in Race 6. Friday’s sequence included successive long shot winners Glittering Judy ($50), Chobee Girl ($26.40) and Onemoregreattime ($40.40), and tickets with four of six winners paid $80.48.

The 50-cent Late Pick 5 (Races 7-11), offering an industry low 12 percent takeout, will have a carryover of $5,572.21. Tickets with two of five winners Friday were worth $8.95.

There will also be a carryover of $754.37 in the $1 Super Hi-5 for Saturday’s opener.

Notes: Elsa was the first of two winners on the day for Russell, who also scored aboard Chobee Girl ($26.40) in the eighth race. Chobee Girl, a 5-year-old Great Notion mare bred in West Virginia, is owned by Thomas Rooney – grandson of late Pittsburgh Steelers founding owner Art Rooney – and his wife, Tara … Jockey Jevian Toledo visited the winner’s circle in back-to-back races with Royal Crusader ($7.20) in the fourth and Daniel Le Deux ($6) in the fifth.
