LAUREL, MD – Making her stakes debut four weeks off a sharp debut victory, Kasey K Racing Stable and Final Turn Racing’s Goodonehoney turned in another impressive performance to win Saturday’s $125,000 Weber City Miss by seven lengths at Laurel Park.
The victory in just her second lifetime start earned Goodonehoney ($8.40) an automatic bid to the $250,000 Black-Eyed Susan (G2) Friday, May 18 at legendary Pimlico Race Course. Ridden by Steve ‘Cowboy’ Hamilton for trainer Jason Egan, she hit the wire in 1:43.49 for about 1 1/16 miles over a fast main track.
Restricted to 3-year-old fillies, the Weber City Miss was the third of five stakes worth $550,000 in purses on an 11-race Spring Stakes Spectacular program highlighted by the $125,000 Xpressbet Federico Tesio for 3-year-olds.
“She really opened our eyes the first time she ran. I have to thank the owners for giving me the opportunity to work with her,” Egan said. “Steve’s done a great job, both first time out and he’s helped us out in the morning doing some work with her and been instrumental in kind of making today happen. We’re really fortunate to have a filly like this. It’s just really exciting and a lot of fun.”
Goodonehoney is the first foal out of the Tenpins dam Diva’s Gold, whom Kasey K claimed for $15,000 at Monmouth Park in 2010 and went on to be multiple stakes-placed and earn nearly $400,000.
“She was a personal favorite of ours,” Krangel said. “We’re kind of a claiming partnership, so when the time came to stop racing her we just said, ‘Let’s try breeding her,’ and here we are.”
Breaking from the rail in a field of nine, Goodonehoney trailed 45-1 long shot Firth through a quarter-mile in 23.59 seconds before assuming the lead after a half in 46.76. Goodonehoney remained in front after six furlongs in 1:11.69 and opened up on her rivals under Hamilton’s urging through the stretch.
Indy Union closed fast on the far outside after overcoming some trouble to get up for second, a half-length ahead of 8-5 favorite Shamrock Rose. Stakes On a Plane, another nose back in fourth, was disqualified to sixth for interference elevating Blue Union Rags to fourth.
“She did everything the right way today. Quite frankly I wasn’t waiting around on anybody. I was just trying to get to the wire first,” Hamilton said. “Coming off a sprint race she was going to be a little keen and I was happy the way she broke. They outran us a little bit but once she got through and got the lead she just pricked her ears and relaxed and I was able to leave her alone a little bit. My hat’s off to Jason for getting the filly ready from first-time out breaking her maiden and sprinting to going long in this kind of race. She’s a nice filly.”
Egan said he expected to take advantage of the all-fees-paid berth to the 1 1/8-mile Black-Eyed Susan.
“We will see how she comes out,” he said. “If all is well and she’s thriving in the next four weeks I’m sure I’ll talk it over with the owners but I think we’d be more than happy to represent the home team in the Black-Eyed Susan with a Maryland-bred.”
G2-Placed Chalon Returns a Winner in $100,000 Primonetta
Multiple Grade 2-placed Chalon, in the first start for her new connections, made a successful return to the races with a one-length victory in the $100,000 Primonetta presented by Ourisman Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep & Ram of Clarksville.
Favored at 9-5 in a field of 10 fillies and mares, Chalon ($3.60) ran six furlongs in 1:09.44 over a fast main track for her second career stakes victory following the Jersey Girl last June, her most recent win.
“She’s a nice filly,” winning jockey Paco Lopez said. “I rode her a couple times before and she ran a couple of strong races. Today she was a little aggressive but I waited to let her go, and she’s very nice. The trainer did a nice job with her and she came back very good.”
Chalon had not raced since finishing second in back-to-back Grade 2 races – the six-furlong Thoroughbred Club of America and seven-furlong Raven Run – 14 days apart last fall at Keeneland for previous trainer Peter Miller, after which she was purchased for $550,000 by Lael Stables at Fasig-Tipton’s Fall 2017 Mixed Sale and moved to the barn of Arnaud Delacour.
Your Pace Or Mine, off at 50-1, was keen early and sailed through a quarter-mile in 21.91 seconds pressed to her outside by Chalon, who took over the top spot around the turn after a half in 45.26. Lopez set her down for a drive through the stretch where she held off a determined bid from Cairenn, who was five lengths ahead of Short Kakes in third. Multiple stakes-winning 3-year-old filly Limited View wound up seventh in her first try against older horses.
“She’s been breezing great all winter. We were very impressed with her,” Delacour said. “She might have been a breeze or two short today, but I thought she did well. That’s what good horses do. We’re very lucky to train her.”
