Third Stakes Winner for Dam Tanca, Second of the Day
LAUREL, MD – There’s no telling the potential of the 3-year-old filly Las Setas after another impressive victory Saturday at Laurel Park.
Coming into the $100,000 Beyond The Wire off a 5 ½-length victory in the Wide Country for Wayne Harrison, Robert Manfuso and KatyVoss, Las Setas led gate-to-wire to win the Beyond the Wire by five lengths for her third consecutive victory.
A daughter of Seville, Las Setas, who covered the mile in 1:37.82, is the third stakes winner for the dam Tanca and was the second of the afternoon. Earlier in the day, Cordmaker, a son of Curlin out of Tanca, won the $100,000 Harrison E. Johnson.
“Phenomenal,” said trainer Voss, who bred Las Setas and Cordmaker with Manfuso. “That makes three stakes winners.”
Tanca, who recently produced a son of Street Sense, also produced 2015 Maryland Million Nursery Stakes winner Corvus, also bred by Manfuso and Voss.
Racing beyond seven furlongs for the first time, Las Setas went unchallenged to the front under jockey Jevian Toledo and set moderate fractions of :24.78, :48.23, 1:13.01 and 1:24.84 before cruising home five in front of Crafty’s Dream. Our Super Freak was third.
“I was happy last time when she went 23.1, so when I saw 24 and change I said that shouldn’t be a problem,” Voss said.
“She did it really easy,” Toledo said “She took the lead and the put her ears up waiting for horses and when I asked her she just took off and kept going. You could see in the last sixteenth she put her ears back up again waiting for horses. I don’t think she could have done it easier than that.”
With three consecutive wins after a sixth-place finish in her racing debut Dec. 31, Voss said “I don’t see any reason not to run right back in the race here,” April 20 in the $125,000 Weber City, a race in which a victory means an automatic berth in the Black-Eyed Susan (G2) May 17 at Pimlico Race Course.
