LAUREL, MD - With blizzard conditions fast approaching, Laurel Park cancelled its Friday program after the fifth race for the safety of its customers, employees, jockeys, horses and horsemen.

Laurel announced the cancellation of its Saturday and Sunday programs Thursday and announced both Laurel and Pimlico would be closed for simulcasting Saturday.

Racing is expected to resume Monday at Laurel at 12:25 p.m.. The first race will have a Super Hi 5 carryover of $16,096.23.

"We met with the horsemen this morning," said Sal Sinatra, President and General Manager of the Maryland Jockey Club. "We told them as soon as (the storm started) we were going to call the races. We're going to seal the track, roll it, pack it tight, and then just wait. It's supposed to end late Saturday night, so I think we're going to be OK Monday."

Leading jockey Trevor McCarthy withstood the 25-degree temperatures Friday afternoon.

"I love winter racing at Laurel," McCarthy said. "This is my third winter riding here. The cold isn't too bad. When the weather gets real tough, it's a little brutal. You just have to dress warm and wear the right gear."
