MJC, MTHA Teaming Up to Celebrate Backstretch Community
Raffles, Prizes, Barbecue, Dunk Tank Among Event Activities

LAUREL, MD – The Maryland Jockey Club is partnering with the Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association in hosting an inaugural Community Day Tuesday, July 23 at Laurel Park.

Created to celebrate the backstretch community and its contribution to the continued success of Maryland racing, Community Day will be held from noon to 4 p.m. outside the track kitchen.

“We are thrilled to work with the MTHA for an event that helps recognize the people behind the scenes, whose love for horses and dedication to their well-being is crucial to not only our success here in Maryland, but to the industry nationwide,” MJC President and General Manager Sal Sinatra said.

Community Day will feature awards and signage presented for both best dorm and best barn housekeeping, as well as a barbecue, raffles, prizes and giveaways.

Also part of the festivities are basketball, pool and volleyball tournaments, yard games, and a dunk tank featuring jockey Victor Carrasco, trainer Anthony Farrior, Major Singletary of MJC Security, MJC Racing Secretary Chris Merz, and MJC Vice President of Facilities and Backside Operations Rick Allen.

Proceeds from the dunk tank will go to benefit Beyond the Wire, Maryland’s Thoroughbred aftercare program. Trainers with stalls that currently have plastic fans can trade in those units for a new metal Dayton fan.

People are encouraged to come in their barn colors and represent their team. Volunteers from the MTHA and MJC’s facilities and track crews, EMTs and racing office will be helping at the event.
