Moon Virginia Rises Late to Capture Eighth Race Feature
LAUREL, MD – There will be carryovers in the 20-cent Rainbow 6 and $1 Super Hi-5 wagers when live racing returns to Laurel Park with a nine-race program Friday, Dec. 1.
No one had all six winners in the Rainbow 6 Sunday, growing the jackpot carryover to $8,636.79. Tickets with five of six winners were worth $899.58.
Friday’s Rainbow 6 spans Races 4-9 and includes $40,000 maiden special weight events for 2-year-old fillies in Race 4 and 9 as well as a $45,000 second-level optional claiming allowance for 3-year-olds and up in Race 8.
A carryover of $1,855.30 will be available in Friday’s opener, a $40,000 maiden special weight for 2-year-olds going 1 1/16 miles on the main track.
In Sunday’s featured eighth race, homebred Moon Virginia came with a steady rally down the center of the track to edge multiple graded-stakes placed favorite Sine Wave by a head in the $47,000 third-level optional claiming allowance for fillies and mares 3 and up.
A Maryland-bred 4-year-old Jump Start filly, Moon Virginia ($14) ran seven furlongs in 1:24.73 over a fast main track to snap a six-race losing streak dating back to October 2016. She had run second and third in back-to-back stakes heading into Sunday’s race.
“I was a little concerned about the distance before the race was run, but turning for home I thought she had a good shot because she was rolling,” said winning trainer Hamilton Smith. “I looked at the fractions and they were pretty quick early, so that helped us a little bit.”
Smith, who captured Saturday’s $50,000 Donna Freyer Stakes with Fanniebellefleming, is the co-breeder and owner of Moon Virginia with Fred and Deborah Greene.
“They play a big part in it. We talk over who we’re going to breed to and so forth, so it’s very nice. It really is,” Smith said. “I’m very proud of her.”
Smith said he will take a look at the $100,000 Thirty Eight Go Go for fillies and mares 3 and older going one mile at Laurel Park Dec. 30 for Moon Virginia.
Notes: Jockey Sheldon Russell scored a riding double aboard Taco Supream ($4.60) in the second race and Moon Virginia ($14) in the eighth. Jockey Luis Reyes and trainer Rudy Rodriguez teamed up to win the sixth with Fortuitous Path ($4.20) in the sixth and Z J Wins ($12.20) in the ninth.
