Maryland Juvenile Futurity, Maryland Juvenile Filly Championship
LAUREL, MD – The spotlight will shine on 2-year-olds when live racing returns to Laurel Park with a pair of $100,000 juvenile stakes for Maryland-bred/sired horses headlining Saturday’s nine-race program.
The Maryland Juvenile Filly Championship (Race 7), led by multiple stakes winner Street Lute, and Maryland Juvenile Futurity (Race 8), featuring the stakes debut of undefeated Jaxon Traveler, will both be contested at seven furlongs.
Lucky 7 Stables’ Street Lute won the six-furlong Smart Halo Nov. 14 at Laurel and is a neck shy of being undefeated through four starts. Her lone loss came in the Oct. 24 Maryland Million Lassie to Miss Nondescript, who brings her 2-0 record into Saturday’s race. The narrow 3-1 program favorite, Street Lute will break from Post 2 while Miss Nondescript drew far outside Post 9.
West Point Thoroughbreds and Marvin Delfiner’s Jaxon Traveler is favored at 4-5 on the morning line for the Futurity off a 10-length maiden special weight triumph Sept. 25 at Laurel and a four-length optional claiming allowance score Oct. 23 at Pimlico Race Course for Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen. Johan Rosado rides from Post 3 in a field of seven including stakes winner Singlino and Maryland Million Nursery runner-up Alwaysinahurry.
First race post time is 12:25 p.m.
Both stakes are included in the 20-cent Rainbow 6 (Races 4-9) and 50-cent Late Pick 5 (Races 5-9) wagers. No bettor selected all six winners in Friday’s Rainbow 6, growing the jackpot carryover to $4,491.87. Tickets with five of six winners were worth $149.46.
Notes: Jockey Jevian Toledo won back-to-back races Friday on Silent Malice ($8.20) in Race 3 and Triple Digit ($) in Race 4 … Meet-leading rider Sheldon Russell also won twice, with Sublimity ($4.20) in Race 2 and Creative Alibi ($7.40) in Race 9.
