Jenn’s the Boss Graduates with Front-Running Effort in Second Start
Rainbow 6, Super Hi-5 Carryovers for Saturday Program
LAUREL, MD – Hillwood Stable and Richard Golden’s stakes winner Majestic Reason, making just her second start of the year and first since mid-May, powered to a 3 ¾-length triumph over seven-time winner Lady by Choice Friday at Laurel Park.
Ridden by Jorge Vargas Jr. for trainer Graham Motion, Majestic Reason ($5.80) ran six furlongs in 1:09.60 over a fast main track in the $45,000 second-level optional claiming allowance for fillies and mares 3 and up.
Majestic Reason, a 4-year-old bay daughter of Majestic Warrior sent off at 9-5, has never been off the board with four wins from seven starts, all with Vargas aboard, including an entry-level allowance in her season debut May 17 at Pimlico Race Course on the Black-Eyed Susan (G2) undercard.
“Last time at Pimlico, I was very impressed with her because she just suddenly took off and went and caught that horse [Final Form] in front, and at the eighth pole [Final Form] was a length and a half or two in front of me and she just went and got she win,” Vargas said. “Today, I just got her to the outside and she was all business.”
Vargas settled Majestic Reason in third along the rail as multiple stakes-placed Our Super Freak, the 8-5 favorite, sailed through fractions of 22.50 and 45.69 seconds. Vargas tipped Majestic Reason outside on the turn and set her down for a drive to the wire, as Our Super Freak dropped back to third and Lady by Choice came through on the inside to get second.
Bred in Maryland by Sycamore Hall Thoroughbreds and Ellen Charles’ Hillwood Stable, Majestic Reason won the Miss Disco for state-breds last August at Laurel in her stakes debut and was second against older horses in the All Brandy and third in the Safely Kept Nov. 10 in her season finale.
“She’s such a nice filly to ride,” Vargas said. “She always tries her best and that was easy today. I just wanted to have her on the outside because the rail does look a little deep, and I didn’t want to be the whole way stalking there. I got her out and that was it.”
Jenn’s the Boss Graduates with Front-Running Effort in Second Start
Charlie Biggs’ Jenn’s the Boss, a Florida-bred daughter of Street Boss, broke running and never looked back for a popular three-quarter length front-running victory in Friday’s eighth race at Laurel, a $40,000 maiden special weight for 2-year-old fillies.
The winning time for 5 ½ furlongs over a firm Kelso turf course was 1:03.35. Secure Connection, trained by Hall of Famer Shug McGaughey, was second, with 12-1 long shot Bella Aurora third. Bernadette the Jet, a first-time starter by 2015 Triple Crown champion American Pharoah, checked in fourth.
“We’re delighted,” winning trainer Cal Lynch said. “We were a little disappointed the first time. We felt she was really fast and got a little unlucky with the break, but she made up for it today. There was a couple of really nice fillies in there. I was afraid of [Three Sided Story] and I was afraid of [Bernadette the Jet] – obviously, some really nice fillies that want to go a little longer – so I’m glad I caught them today.
“She’s a nice filly in her own right,” he added. “The Street Bosses aren’t anything to sneeze at. She’s fast and these little fillies this time of year, that’s what they can do. They can go out there and get the money.”
Summer meet-leading jockey Trevor McCarthy hustled Jenn’s the Boss from the gate and led through a quarter-mile in 23.53 seconds and a half in 46.65, pressed first by stablemate Giggling before Secure Connection picked up the chase. Jenn’s the Boss, favored at 7-5, straightened for home with a three-length lead and had plenty left to hold off Secure Connection, who edged Bella Aurora by a head for the place.
Purchased for $65,000 as a 2-year-old in training in April, Jenn’s the Boss debuted June 28 at Laurel, breaking slowly and rushing to the lead before fading to be third as the favorite. Lynch hinted he may try her in stakes company next time out.
“I’m not sure. I’ll talk to Charlie and we’ll find a spot for her,” he said. “That’s two races in a couple weeks so we’ll give her a little time and come back maybe in the Selima or something like that.”
The $200,000 Selima for 2-year-old fillies going 1 1/16 miles over Laurel’s world-class turf course is one of six stakes worth $950,000 in purses Saturday, Sept. 21, topped by the $200,000 Baltimore-Washington International Turf Cup (G3).
Notes: Jockey Trevor McCarthy notched back-to-back wins Friday aboard Jenn’s the Boss ($4.80) in Race 8 and Steamy Hot ($6.60) in Race 9. Apprentice Julio Correa visited the winner’s circle twice, with Hashtag Selfie ($5.20) in Race 2 and Bestatgettingbetter ($4) in Race 10. Trainer Claudio Gonzalez had a pair of wins with Life in Flash ($5) in Race 1 and Ankle Monitor ($10) in Race 6, giving him five wins in a two-day span.
There will be carryovers of $6,244.97 in the 20-cent Rainbow 6 (Races 5-10) and $1,447.75 in the $1 Super Hi-5 (Race 1) for Friday’s 10-race card. First race post time is 1:10 p.m.
