LAUREL, MD – In addition to six stakes, two graded, worth $850,000 in purses, renovated Laurel Park will have an array of winter-themed activities and food and drink specials Saturday as part of its annual Winter Carnival program.
Doors open Saturday at 11 a.m. Post time for the first of 10 races is 12:30 p.m.
Bettors can take advantage of an all-stakes 20-cent Rainbow 6 wager and 50-cent Late Pick 5 wager with an industry-low 12 percent takeout, anchored by the 62nd running of the $300,000 Barbara Fritchie (G2) for older fillies and mares in Race 9 (post time 4:30 p.m.) and the 40th running of the $250,000 General George (G3) for 4-year-olds and up in Race 10 (post time 5 p.m.) Both races are run at seven furlongs.
Other stakes on Winter Carnival Day are:
• The $75,000 Maryland Racing Media for older females at 1 1/16 miles (Race 5)
• The $75,000 Wide Country for 3-year-old fillies at seven furlongs (Race 6)
• The Miracle Wood for 3-year-olds at one mile (Race 7)
• The $75,000 John B. Campbell for 4-year-olds and up at 1 1/8 miles (Race 8)
Activities on Winter Carnival Day include:
• Ice carvings and demonstrations throughout the track
• Ice bar and an ice wall with more than $2,500 in prizes frozen inside
• Maryland Jockey Club Travel Tumbler with purchase of a program
• Winter-themed face painting and snowflake decorations
• Icy photo opportunity with a mitten photo frame
The Terrace Dining Room will feature a $32 buffet from noon to 4 p.m. Unlimited Bloody Marys and Mimosas are also available for an additional $12.
