Total Handle Up 62 Percent on Laurel’s Winter Carnival

Fritchie (G3), General George (G3) Highlight Fives Stakes

LAUREL, MD – Saturday’s Winter Carnival at Laurel Park, featuring the $250,000 Barbara Fritchie (G3) and $250,000 General George (G3), generated a total handle of $4.338 million, up 62 percent from last year with one less race.
    
Last year’s total handle on the day of the Winter Carnival was $2.668 million. In-state handle swelled 57.7 percent.

LAUREL, MD – Three Diamonds Farm’s Bonus Points, trailing all but one horse after a half-mile, swept to the lead on the far outside and outfought favored Monongahela through the stretch to win Saturday’s $100,000 John B. Campbell presented by Fidelity First at Laurel Park.

Patterson Wins First Stakes with Uncontested in General George (G3)

LAUREL, MD – Saddling just her 18th starter as a trainer and first in a stakes race, Jenn Patterson admitted she “definitely had tears in my eyes” when Uncontested, owned by Robert LaPenta and Harry Rosenblum, went nearly gate-to-wire to win the $250,000 General George Saturday afternoon at Laurel Park.

Alwaysmining Wins Miracle Wood for Fourth Consecutive Victory

LAUREL, MD – Runnymede Racing LLC’s Alwaysmining won his fourth consecutive race and third consecutive stakes with a 4 1/4-length victory in Saturday’s $100,000 Miracle Wood presented by Blackwell Real Estate at Laurel Park.

A 3-year-old gelded son of Stay Thirsty, trained by Kelly Rubley and ridden by Daniel Centeno, Alwaysmining covered the mile in 1:35.27. Gray Magician, who shipped from California, finished second by a nose over Tybalt.

Stronach 5 Carryover for Friday, Feb. 22

LAUREL, MD – With no winning tickets in Friday’s Stronach 5, the national pick 5 wager with an industry-low 12-percent takeout is expected to climb to more than $500,000 Friday, Feb. 22.

The carryover going into next Friday’s is $169,305.51.
